Holiday Burglary Prevention Tips

Important Tips to Keep Your Home Secure This Holiday Season

With the holidays upon us, we find ourselves in a frenzy of preparation. So protecting your residence against a home invasion is a necessity whether you are spending time at home or traveling to visit family. It is important to remember that this exciting time of the year is the peak season for burglaries and break-ins.

While your home security system is the most effective defense against these types of risks, additional steps can be taken to provide your home with the highest level of protection. Following these basic steps will ensure a joyous and safe holiday season for you and your loved ones.

Five Simple Steps to Protect Your Home Against Unwanted Intruders

1. Secure all doors and windows.  Make sure your regular doors have dead bolts installed and locked, especially the door leading to the garage. Don’t rely on an automatic garage door opener to enter your home. For sliding glass doors, cut a wooden pole or thick dowel that matches the length of the sliding track when the door is closed. This simple trick can keep the door from being compromised.

2. Decrease valuable visibility.  Move expensive appliances away from windows and out of sight. Visibility of these items can attract burglars to your home.

3. Exterior lighting.  Exterior lighting and motion sensors to light up your house at night. The extra lighting will make it more difficult for intruders to enter without being seen.

4. Maintain the shrubbery at your entrances.  Keep shrubbery trimmed so the interior of your home is visible and burglars can’t hide undetected.

5. Use your alarm.  Your alarm system is the most effective line of defense. Remember to make sure that it is installed and programmed properly. Also, make sure the security system warning sign is visible. Burglars are less likely to break into a home with a security system.

Holiday Travel Checklist

Travel-Security-Tips
With the holidays, comes an increase in burglaries. Implementing a few extra security measures before you leave for vacation could prevent your home from being targeted.

• Stop the mail paper.  Piles of mail and newspapers are a dead giveaway that you are not home. Ask a neighbor to stop by daily to pick up your mail and newspapers have them stopped.

• Leave a light on.  Using timers to light parts of your house while you are gone is a good way to give potential intruders the appearance that someone is home.

• Keeping your neighbors informed.  Letting your neighbors know when you will be gone will give your house extra protection and allow them to report anything suspicious.

• Alert the Police.  If you plan to be gone for an extended period of time, let your local police know. They may periodically drive by your home.

Study Shows Burglars Avoid Alarm Systems

A new AIREF-funded study scientifically supports the industry’s assertion that alarm systems deter burglars. More than four in five incarcerated respondents say they would try to determine if an alarm was present before attempting a burglary. And the presence of an alarm system would cause more than half the intruders to abort.

Excepts from an article by Joseph B. Kuhns, Ph.D. and Kristie R. Blevins, Ph.

Research seeking to understand the criminological and deterrent factors associated with burglary and burglars’ decision-making processes has been conducted through victimization surveys, interviews or surveys with active or incarcerated offenders, and analyses of crime, census and land use.

What motivates burglars to engage in burglary? What factors are considered by burglars during target selection? What deters burglars from burglarizing specific targets? What techniques do burglars use when engaging in burglary? Are their gender differences in burglary motivations, target selection and techniques?

By venturing inside the minds of actual perpetrators, this unique study provides fascinating insights. According to the findings, a majority of burglars considered the presence of deterrents such as alarms, outdoor cameras and other surveillance equipment when choosing a potential residential or commercial target. Approximately 83% of the offenders said they would attempt to determine if an alarm was present before attempting a burglary, and about 73% said they would seek an alternative target. Among those who discovered the presence of an alarm while attempting a burglary, half reported they would discontinue the attempt, while another 37% said they would sometimes retreat.

The bottom line is what we in the industry have known for years. The first line of defense and deterrent is a security sign and stickers on key windows or doors. My sincere hope is for none of our customers to experience a break in of any kind. But like in football, the best defense is a good offense.

Beware of Door Knockers

Dear friends,
During the summer and just after, you can expect to see salesmen going door-to-door in neighborhoods selling various home services including home security services.  There is nothing wrong with this type of sales practice. However, many of the individual sales people are under tremendous pressure to close a sale on the spot, and some resort to pressure sales tactics.  For example, he might say “I’m from the alarm company, and I’m here to upgrade your system.” Or “your neighbor, Mrs. Smith, said you should consider this service.”

What to do:
1. Ask to see the license and proof of insurance for the service provider.

2. Wait 24 hours to make any decision for home services, especially services that involve long-term contracts.

3. Do some very basic research. Visit www.bbb.org or www.angieslist.com for unbiased reviews and ratings of service providers.

4. Ask for references. Speak to 2 or 3 different customers who have used the service provider for over a year.

Owen Security Solutions offers the latest technologies in home security and interactive services, including smartphone apps, cameras, and thermostat and lighting control. Business Access Control System

Owen Security Solutions has proudly been serving the business owners of North Georgia for 40 years.

It can be difficult to control who is going in and out of the building when you are trying to manage your workforce. Businesses big or small need to focus on security, as anyone can be vulnerable to unwanted visitors. An access control system will help you to manage all of this and to ensure that your building, employees, products and important information are secure.

In fact, security is the primary reason for having an access control system. Many types of business simply cannot afford for unwanted and unknown visitors to enter their premises, through fear of theft or that confidential data might be compromised or abused. Of course, access control isn’t just about stopping outsiders from coming in, but also about stopping workers from going where they shouldn’t or don’t need to be. The right kind of system can provide different levels of access to different people if you need it that way.

Every business is different, and even within a single business there can be many different requirements as regards access control. The best kind of system will be one that is flexible and that can work with you to give you everything you need. Whether you have an apartment building, run a school, hospital, bank or office, you should choose the system that matches your needs ideally.

With an Owen Security Solutions Access Control System you will be able to:

  • Manage Access – Control who has access into your facility and know exactly where they are at what time.
  • Monitor Access – Having the knowledge of who and when people enter your facility, you will be able to identify culprits and recover assets should a crime occur.
  • Remote Access – Manage and monitor who accesses your building anytime with your computer or mobile device.
  • Make Keys Obsolete – Never worry from having to collect keys from a disgruntled employee. Using our Access Control Systems, you will never have to make a new key or worry about a lost key again.

As a small business owner in Calhoun, GA we know how hard it is to run a small business. We are here for you and are committed to protecting your business and employees.

We look forward to protecting you.

Protect Your Family from Carbon Monoxide “The Silent Killer”

Our friends at the National Fire Protection Association wrote some great tips to keep you safe from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

As a proud member of the National Fire Protection Association, Owen Security Solutions can keep you and your family safe from this deadly gas. Below are some great tips from the N.F.P.A.

Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide.

  • CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height.
  • Choose a CO alarm that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
  • Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds.
  • Test CO alarms at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries. If the battery is low, replace it. If it still sounds, call the fire department.
  • If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel.
  • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow.
  • During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up.
  • A generator should be used in a well-ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings.
  • Gas or charcoal grills can produce CO — only use outside.
